The Selfish Peacemaker

Why is peace so elusive? Why is it so fleeting and nearly impossible to attain? That's what is bothering me so much right now in my current situation. No matter how hard I try to help people resolve their problems, in the end it comes down to whether or not they themselves want the problems resolved. It seems that some people don't just hold a grudge, they clutch it with every ounce of energy they have.

"If possible, as far as it depends upon you, be peaceable with all men" (Romans 12:18). What reasonable advice. So why can't I accept it? I only ever notice the "be peaceable" part, but never the "if possible" or "as far as." Why is it so difficult for me to understand that it is impossible to make people make peace?

Time will help, I guess. Time and a lot of venting.

  1. I too have often wondered why many refuse to let things go. Quite often the need for "excitement" (better known as drama...) far exceeds the bibles principles on being peacekeepers. As an imperfect human, I too, have been victim to not wanting to promote peace on certain occasions. Try as I may to understand, I simply don't.
